BFAALLEY-Bandanas
THE HISTORY OF THE BANDANA
In Ancient China, wrapping the hair (often held in a topknot) was common during physical labour and military service. Large silk scarves or bandanas are frequently found in Latin America as well, though they are typically worn under a Panama hat. They are very commonly seen in Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, Colombia, Haiti & Peru (this custom may very well have come from the African slaves brought to this part of the Spanish-speaking world). These scarves or bandanas were in much wider use at one time, being worn by the Spanish in what is now the American Southwest. It was common to see a black or white silk scarves or bandanas worn under a matching black or white bolero hat by the Spanish horsemen or vaqueros. The most notable example is the bandana worn by the fictional character Zorro. It was this silk bandana that spawned the trend among cowboys to start sporting cotton bandanas.

HOW TO FOLD A BANDANA
1. Place the bandana with the printed side, or the side you want to show, face down. Smooth out the bandana so it's flat.
2. Rotate the bandana so that one corner is pointing toward you, making it look like a diamond shape.
3. Fold the bandana in half from top to bottom, forming a triangle. The long edge should be on top and the pointed end should still be pointing toward you.
4. Fold the bottom point up about one inch, so that the bottom edge is flatter.
5. Fold the bottom edge up about one to two inches, or the width you want the finished bandana.
6. Fold the bandana up the same width again. Continue folding until the entire bandana forms a flat, narrow strip.
7. Pick up the bandana carefully and place the folded side (the side that was
facing up) against your forehead to use the bandana as a headband, or over the player's eyes for a blindfold.
8. Wrap the ends of the folded bandana around the head and tie them together. Make sure the bandana is snug enough to prevent it from unfolding, but not so tight that it's uncomfortable. A blindfold should be looser than a headband. How To Fold a Bandana
Folding a bandana with no overlapping creates a smooth look that shows off the print
or pattern of the bandana. It's perfect for folding a square bandanna into flat strip to
use as a headband, or as a blindfold for games. To use the folded bandana for a
headband or blindfold, you'll need to start with a bandana that's large enough to wrap comfortably around your forehead or eyes, with enough material leftover to tie in the back. A 22 inch square standard sizes bandana works well for most people, but you can also use a 27 inch square oversized bandana, or an 18 inch square bandana for a child. Handkerchief sized, or 14 inch square, bandanas are generally too small to use as headbands or blindfolds.

ANOTHER WAY TO FOLD A BANDANA
For
years the bandana has been a fashion accessory in use by everyone from gangsters to cowboys. Depending on
how you wear it, the bandana can make a powerful statement, or serve a useful purpose. Some of the
best ways to tie and wear bandanas are outlined below. The first and most popular way to wear a bandana is to wear it as a
headband. Sometimes a similar type of tie is worn around the wrist but the method is the same. The headband style can be
worn to hold back longer hair or just for looks on shorter hair. The best way to tie a bandana into the
headband style is to fold the bandana from corner to corner forming a triangle. Fold the top two corners of the
triangle down several times at a good width until you have a rectangular shape with two pointed edges. Tie
the two pointed edges together with the bandana wrapped around your head to finish the tie. To alter this look
to make it more personalized, you can unfold a section to leave a little triangle of bandana hanging down
over your eyes or to the side. You can also rotate the knot to the side or to the front depending on your style.

Another fashionable and functional way to wear a bandana is around the neck. You do not have to be a cowboy to
wear your bandana like this. This is probably the simplest way to wear a bandana, as it involves only two
steps. Fold the bandana in half from corner to corner, and then tie around the neck. This style can compliment a plain
t-shirt or be used to keep your neck warm like a scarf. A simple moderation to the around the neck style is the ski mask style.
Simply move the top of the triangle from the around the neck so it covers your mouth and nose.

The pirate style is the last style and perhaps trickiest to tie. Sometimes this style is paired with a hat overtop,
but is often worn independently as well. This style is good for absorbing sweat if you are exercising in the heat. You
may want to have someone help you tie the bandana if you are having trouble. Start with a diagonal fold from
corner to corner like in the other ties (You can adjust how much you fold over if half is too little). With the top
two corners in your hands orient the bandana with the longest edge on your forehead. Throw the bottom corner over
your head and down the back of your head. Draw the two top corners around your head and tie in a tight
knot that overlaps and holds down the bottom corner.

These are just the basic ties and styles of wearing a bandana. Each of these styles
can be moderated depending on your personal needs and wants.
